Supporting healthier habits at home: Oral care reminders for parents and caregivers

Laying the groundwork for lifelong oral health
June is Dental Smiles Month, a timely reminder that lifelong oral health begins in early childhood. Going to the dentist regularly and establishing care routines at home can help protect growing teeth and support long-term well-being.
Key oral health guidance to share with parents and caregivers:
- Begin building healthy habits early. A soft, clean and damp cloth or finger brush can be used to clean an infant’s gums after feeding as soon as they are born.
- Use toothpaste as recommended. Once teeth appear, a smear is appropriate for children younger than 3, and a pea-sized amount for those 3 and older.
- Start brushing as soon as teeth are visible. A soft-bristled, child-sized toothbrush should be used twice a day.
- Supervise brushing. Guide children to brush effectively, using the correct amount of toothpaste and spitting out any excess.
- Use fluoride. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acids. Look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance to ensure toothpaste contains fluoride.
- Avoid bottles at bedtime. Infants should not be put to sleep with a bottle.
- Don’t skip flossing. Begin flossing once at least two teeth touch.
- Visit the dentist regularly. Children should have their first dental appointment when their first tooth appears or by their first birthday.
Dental providers and benefits professionals both play a role in prevention — whether through direct patient education or by promoting access to covered services. By sharing accurate, actionable information, you can help encourage early habits that lead to better oral health outcomes.
